Social cohesion is widely regarded as the foundation for progress. People lend to people they trust. People employ people they trust. People refer people they trust. People do business with people they trust. Societies with higher degrees of trust tend to be more successful. The consequences of being “untrustworthy”, in such a society, become untenable to the person who is disclosed as such. The basis of trust is common values. Negative consequence is a vital element for this all to work. On a macro perspective, I suppose, some of South Africa’s issues are described above. Criminals have very different sets of values and our society has little or no negative consequences for “anti-social” behavior.
